From runway to ridge: how private charters unlock secluded slopes and luxury mountain escapes

As the heat subsides and snow begins to blanket peaks from Colorado to the Alps, the ski season is visible on the horizon. Kicking off in mid-November, and running through to mid-March, desires shift from passing time poolside, the passion for that perfect powdery snow takes over.

As winter draws crowds to the world’s most popular ski resorts, slopes become a blur of bustling activity – lift lines lengthen, après-ski spots overflow, and the serenity of the mountains gives way to the buzz of peak-season tourism.

For those who crave privacy and exclusivity, however, there’s a quieter alternative: secluded slopes tucked far from the public eye – made more accessible by private charter, untouched powder and tranquility await beyond the reach of the masses, transforming what is often a multi-hour mountain mission into a seamless and luxurious sojourn.

Why private aviation is a game-changer for remote skiing

Travelling on scheduled flights often means having to transfer via long drives on snowy passes, unpredictable weather delays, and precious ski-time lost in transit. Private jet charters unlock:

  • Direct access to smaller, regional airports and fixed base operators (FBOs);
  • Flexible schedules to navigate mountain weather windows;
  • Tailored aircraft options – from light jets for quick hops to long-range cabins for jet-set comfort;
  • Concierge-level ground transfers – helicopters, snowcats, or luxury 4X4s on demand.

North America’s hidden ski gems

Silverton Mountain (Colorado)

Closest viable airport:

Durango–La Plata County Airport (DRO)

Reasons for limited reach:

No beginner terrain, no groomed trails, and no on-mountain lodgings. Heavy snowfall and rugged roads make this a true adventure for seasoned skiers - from runway to ridge in 25 minutes.

Alternative options:

  • On demand shuttle bus – approximately two hours, including a change at Purgatory;
  • Car – approximately one hour 45 minutes.

Revelstoke, British Columbia

Closest viable airport:

Kelowna International Airport (YLW)

Reasons for limited reach:

A 2+ hour drive through avalanche-prone passes compared with a short 30-45 minute helicopter ride for those who prefer altitude over asphalt. Revelstoke’s deep powder and extreme terrain are legendary for skiers who thrive on challenging pistes.

Alternative options:

  • Bus – approximately three hours 40 minutes, including a change at Salmon Arm;
  • Car – approximately two hours 20 minutes.

Telluride, Colorado

Closest viable airport:

Telluride Regional Airport (TEX)

Reasons for limited reach:

One of the highest airports in North America, TEX is often subject to wind diversions. If this happens, diversions will route clients through Montrose (MTJ), adding ground transfer time. Narrow, winding mountain roads add complexity in winter – the solution? A 30-45 minute helicopter transfer from MTJ.

Alternative options:

  • On demand shuttle bus – approximately one hour 45 minutes
  • Car – approximately one hour 35 minutes

Tordrillo Mountain Lodge, Alaska (Heli-skiing)

Closest viable airport:

Ted Stevens Anchorage International (ANC)

Reasons for limited reach:

No roads, no lifts – just heli-skiing on pure back-country pistes. A short 40 minute hop from Anchorage via ski planes or helicopters is a small price to pay for a truly off-grid experience.

No alternatives – approximately 36 miles (58 km) as the crow flies from the nearest major road.

Europe’s hidden ski gems

Courchevel, France

Closest viable airport:

Chambery (CMF)

Reasons for limited reach:

Courchevel’s altiport is only suitable for light aircraft and helicopters due to its difficult approach and elevation of 2,008m. Road transfers can be slow and snowy, but a 25-minute helicopter flight from Chambery allows your clients to make a seamless transfer from arrivals to alpine adventures.

Alternative options:

  • Train – the closest station is Moutiers, which connects directly with Geneva, and takes about four hours (including transfers);
  • Car– travelling by road takes about 2 hours, and can be a difficult journey requiring the use of snow chains in the winter months.

St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria

Closest viable airport:

Innsbruck (INH)

Reasons for limited reach:

Nestled deep in the Arlberg region, St. Anton, also known as ‘the cradle of Alpine skiing’ requires a lengthy drive from any of its surrounding airports, making it less convenient for those looking to avoid long travel times. Helicopter transfers cut travel time to around 30 minutes, and offer stunning alpine views of the valleys below.

Alternative options:

  • Train – approximately an hour and ten minutes to the town’s station;
  • Car– approximately an hour and five minutes, though mountain roads are prone to weather-centric closures and delays.

Zermatt, Switzerland

Closest viable airport:

Sion Airport (SIR)

Reasons for limited reach:

As Zermatt itself is car-free, and as an iconic stop on the Glacier Express, the only way to access Zermatt on public transportation is via train (which can take north of two hours from local airports). If the pull of powdery snow is too great for two hours’ travel, a helicopter can take you from Sion Airport to Zermatt in under 30 minutes.

Alternative options:

  • Train – approximately two hours;
  • Car– approximately an hour and 10 minutes by road to Täsch, after which drivers must take the shuttle to Zermatt.
